Barrister right on home turf in Campbelltown

TO ENLIST the help of a barrister no longer means a trip to the heart of Sydney's central business district for Campbelltown residents.

Barrister Peter Doyle has set up the Macarthur region's first chambers right here on Queen Street. Campbelltown Legal Chambers opened in Milgate Arcade in December to provide extra support and expert legal advice to the area's growing population. "Having local chambers will save people travelling into the city," Mr Doyle said.

"We've got 200,000 people living in the region now; that's expected to rise to 500,000 in the next 20 or 30 years. "That's a lot of people having to travel to Parramatta or the city for barristers' conferences."

Mr Doyle remains a member of Queens Square Chambers in Sydney but will spend more time in Campbelltown. He has lived in Glen Alpine since 1988.

"I'm a local and I like the idea of being able to service my community," Mr Doyle said.

The brother of Campbelltown MP Bryan Doyle, Mr Doyle worked as a police officer and prosecutor for 15 years.

He then spent time at Marsden's Law Group, including a stint as head of the criminal law division, before switching to the bar in 2001.

While solicitors could cater to people's day-to-day legal needs, a barrister could offer more specialised representation and advocacy in court, Mr Doyle said.
